HMI Project Backup Before Repair or Migration

A practical HMI project-backup checklist covering source files, uploads, recipes, settings, communications, and recovery evidence before service.

An HMI project is often more valuable than the panel hardware. Before shipping, resetting, repairing, or replacing a terminal, establish what project assets exist and whether a recoverable copy can be made safely.

Direct Answer

Always back up the HMI project and document the physical and network environment before altering or replacing a terminal. A verified backup minimizes operational risk.

Preserve before changing anything

  • Locate the original editable project and note its software version.
  • If an upload is supported and authorized, preserve the retrieved file without overwriting the original.
  • Export or record recipes, logs, alarm history, retained values, users, and runtime settings where applicable.
  • Photograph network, serial, fieldbus, removable-media, and power connections.
  • Record IP addresses, node addresses, communication parameters, and PLC relationships.

Validate the backup

A file existing is not the same as a usable recovery package. Keep an untouched copy, record checksums where practical, and have a qualified controls professional confirm that the required software, credentials, transfer method, and dependent files are available.

  • Do not assume every runtime can be converted back into editable source.
  • Do not test a restore on the only production terminal.
  • Handle machine credentials and proprietary project files as private operational data.

Handling damaged terminals

If a terminal has a failed display or touch grid but still communicates, it may still be possible to extract the project over the network or serial port using the manufacturer's programming tool. Do not factory-reset a malfunctioning unit in an attempt to clear a fault.
